GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT MY PAINTING PHOTOGRAPHY Services (top)

I have photographed thousands of paintings, drawings and prints over the years, and have an ideal setup to handle any type of work you might have.

I usually shoot paintings against a black background to reduce light bounce-back which can degrade an image. This background will be usually get cropped out later. I can also shoot paintings against a white background or another color, but shadows will be visible. You may want this to indicate the depth of your canvas or if you paint on wood panels that have have wide sides.

If you want the texture or brushstrokes of your work to show, I’ll make lighting adjustments so that these details are clearly visible. Paintings under glass are not a problem, although it is always better if you can have your work photographed before it is framed. I can handle glossy, dark or very light paintings, and paintings that have subtle details that are often difficult to capture. I have an easel for shooting work on masonite panels, and can handle paintings that need to be suspended overhead and away from a wall.

My studio has a nice hardwood floor and white walls. I can include these if your painting is very large, to indicate scale or to simulate a gallery setting.

I use tape to secure most paper pieces to the shooting wall, but if you are worried about damaging your work, I have a metal wall to shoot against, and your work will be attached to it with strong magnets. Artwork can also be laid on a background and shot from above.

I don’t use just one type of lighting to shoot paintings, but rely instead on a variety of techniques to create lighting that makes your paintings look their very best.

Once your paintings have been photographed, the digital files will need to be corrected so they match your paintings. To make this easier to do, I created a room at my studio with special lighting and highly-accurate computer monitors that are specifically designed for color matching. When your paintings are displayed next to my large monitors in this room, I am able to make a proper evaluation, and then correct the digital images so that they closely match your original painting. I will then crop out the background and size the image to your requirements.

I can combine several individual images to make a diptych or triptych. This is sometime easier to do than hanging and shooting an assembled piece. The size of the image file created this way will be larger, and of much better quality than a single image of your painting.

When the files are finished I’ll then burn a CD or DVD containing several folders. Each folder will have a different image size or type that you’ll need for your applications, website, emailing and printing. I can also copy the files to a flash card if you prefer.

I welcome your participation during the shoot- your feedback helps me to create the best possible photographs of your work.

Photography For Shows and Grant Applications (top)

Although there are exceptions, I'm finding most shows are now asking for 5" x 7", 300 dpi (dots per inch) jpeg files on CD. If you don’t know exactly what you need, bring a printout or website link to the studio and I’ll figure it out for you.

Call ahead of time to get a written quote and to schedule a shoot. Please don’t wait to the last minute to have your work shot because I may be involved with another project and may not be able to help you. If you bring your paintings to the studio and stay for the shoot, you’ll be able to walk away with a CD containing exactly what you need for you show applications, as well as any other use you can think of.

Basic Shoot - Phototography and Show or Application Files (basic order) (top)

Photograph 5 medium paintings, drawing or prints (up to 30 x 40 inches or 1200 sq. inches) and supply a CD with matching image files for one show. You may be able to resize these images for other uses. This is my basic order and gives you the lowest cost per piece - $125.

Small orders (top)

If you have fewer than 5 medium-sized flat works of art, the cost for the first piece would be $50, two pieces would be $75, three pieces would $100, and 4 to 5 pieces would be a basic order costing $125.

If you bring your work by before 10:30 am (call for an appointment please), I will have your work ready the next morning. If you stay for the shoot you'll leave with a finished CD and your original artwork one to two hours later.

Additional normal-sized paintings up to 30 x 40 inches (1200 sq. inches) are $22.50 each,

Prices for Paintings Larger than 30 x 40 inches or 1200 sq inches

Paintings up to to 40 x 60 inches (2400 sq. inches) are $10 more than the standard prices. For example, if you have a basic order of 5 paintings and one of them is larger, the price for the set would be $125 plus $10 for a total of $135. Additional painting of this size beyond the 5 would be $22.50 plus $10 for a total of $32.50 per extra painting.

Paintings up to that 50 x 70 inches or 3500 sq inches are $35 additional for any sized order. I use and entirely different photography technique for works this size. There may be some flexibility reqarding the upper limit if the work is easy to light.

Hourly Photography Fees for Oversized or Very Difficult Work. (top)

For works larger than 50 x 70 inches, or for works that are much more difficult to shoot than unusual, the fee is $120/hour. I'll custom light and photograph your work and create any type of file you need during the time you've paid for. I'll have a basic setup available when you arrive, but any additional setup or lighting would be part of the fee. There is no charge for breakdown of the set. There is no extra charge for CD burning. CDs are $1 each.

I have a method of photographing works of practically any size and creating very large files - 500 meg and beyond - which are used as 4x5 transparency replacements, or for creating Giclee prints. My fee does not include more than basic test prints and covers the entire time you are at the studio. See my Giclée website for per-piece capture and proofing prices, and prices for prints on fine art papers and stretched canvas.

Additional File Types that are created at the same time as your shoot (top)

I can provide additional sets of files formatted for other shows for $20 per each set of one file type. This includes files for Zapplication and eJury, digital jury slide submission systems used by many shows. If you have a Zapplication or eJury username and password, I'll upload your files for $20 per set. This does not include files for postcards. And this would be for files up to 5x7 iches and 360 dpi. 8x10 files for home printing are $35 each. I'll add a border to your 8x10 images for no additional cost. I can also provide a set containing both large and small images for websites or emailing for $20.

Diptychs and Triptychs created at the same time as your shoot (top)

If I combine two existing images to make a diptych the prices is $25 plus the cost of the existing images. Triptych are $30 each.

CDs and DVDs
Alll orders come with one CD. Additional CD copies - $5 each.

Postcard Front Image Files created at the time of your shoot (top)

Files sized for large or small postcards are $25 each. This would be on top of of basic 5 paintings shoot ($125) or a small shoot . A postcard file would be a CMYK files at 355 dpi. This would be just an image file for the front of the card that you could upload to your printer. I can upload the file for you - if you register with your printer and get a username, password and place a job order with them ahead of time, and the cost would be $15. If you're unprepared the cost to upload would be $35.

For not much more I can take care of photography, file prep, postcard design, placement of your order and uploading of your files - and have it all done before you leave the studio with your paintings.

Complete Postcard File Preparation, Postcard Design, Printing, Ordering and Uploading package.

After you've paid for a basic or small photography order, I can create a postcard with your choice of image and available fonts and upload the files to a commercial printer with you while you're still at the studio. The postcards would be sent directly to your home by the printer. I'd process one image for the front of the card and add a border, text or a logo if you have one. The back of the card would be in a standard postcard format but I would add any text you have to personalize your card. The cost for these design services and file uploading is $100. Additional images can added to the card for $25 each. Postcard printing would be at cost, and you're welcome to place the order while at the studio on my computer.

In other words, if you have already paid for a basic order of 5 paintings ($125) you can have a basic postcard designed and sent of to a printer of your choice before you leave the studio for another $100 ($225 total) If you come to me with just one painting, the total cost for photography ($50) plus postcard design ($100) would be $150.

The cost for your printing would be whatever the company you're using charges. It could be Modern Postcard, Vista Print, Sharp Dots or some other printer. Payment for the order would be by your credit card while at the studio, when we are online placing the order and uploading your files. You'd pay the printer, not me, for the printing.

Upgrading a Show File for Giclée Art Reproduction Printing (top)

If you want to have one of your paintings photographed for Giclée prints, I can do so with advance notice. Giclée art reproduction printing files are much larger than those used for other purposes and are time- consuming to create, but I do so for artists all the time.

The price to upgrade your standard show file to a high-resolution Giclée file (with a matching proof for the studio) and a 11x14 Giclée print on archival watercolor paper or smooth fine art paper is $124.64. Additional prints after that are only $24.64 each if ordered at the same time. You can also order additional prints in the future. If you are not in a rush I will even waive my minimum reorder fee if I can print your job with other small orders at the studio.

Upgrade to a 16x20 printing files, proof and print for $163.40. Additional prints after that are $38.40 each.

If you have other sizes your want, I'll subtract the cost of your show file from the Giclée printing fees. Just ask and I'll work up a price for you.

Giclée capture and proofing takes a week, and an additional week for printing.

I have a separate website dedicated to Giclée printing and information about the process and pricing can be found at www.Artopiagiclee.com

Payment (top)

I accept checks, cash and all major credit card for payment. Except for Giclée printing, all payments are expected when the job is completed. Giclée printing order require a 50% deposit and the rest is paid when the order is picked up.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF PAINTINGS FOR REPRODUCTION (top)

If you would like to have reproductions of your paintings I have a separate website dedicated to this. The address is www.ArtopiaGiclee.com. If I make files for reproductions for you, other files from the same images are available for a nominal fee.

PHOTOGRAPHY Of PAINTINGS and 3D ART FOR ART SCHOOL and GENERAL COLLEGE APPLICATIONS (top)

Art Schools vary regarding their requirements, and you may not understand what is being asked for. I can decipher their codes and create what you need.

When I photograph student art work I provide files that are needed for your main school choice burned to CD. You may be able to reuse these files for other schools that have the same file requirement, and I can burn additional CD's for those schools. If a different file type or presentation is required for other schools, I can create a file or presentations as needed.

If you're applying to a liberal arts college and art is not going to be your major, you may find that a professionally photographed art portfolio will provide you with an unusual edge in the application process. One art instructor I work with claims it has helped a number of his students get into their top school choices. And these were not art schools.

PORTFOLIO CD'S AND CUSTOM GALLERY SUBMISSIONS (top)

Galleries have a variety of different submission requirements. I can help you figure out what they need and create a submission CD or print portfolio for you as needed. This is a CD cover I designed for Ellen Rolli. I'll work with existing images, shoot new images, scan images, rework your digital files to size, create a CD cover, do a CD imprint or anything else that you need for you submission. I can even get special CD covers and boxes for your submission. This is custom work at $120/hr.

SLIDES, 4X5 and 8x10 TRANSPARENCIES (top)

I still shoot slides on a regular basis for artists and can do so for you if you still need them. I charge by the roll. I don't shoot and precooks half rolls. You get 7 pieces of art shot on a roll of 36 exp. film.

I rarely shoot transparencies anymore but if you still need them I can do so. I'd advise high-resolution digital images. See my art reproduction website for more info.

Pricing

Slides of 7 paintings on a roll of 36 exposure film, any combination of quantity - $150. Additional rolls, $125 each.

(3)4x5 transparencies each of four paintings, minimum order, $250 . Includes film, processing and shooting. Normal delivery one week.

(3)8x10 transparencies each of four paintings, minimum order $800 (approx.). Includes film, processing and shooting. Film stock is limited. I currently have about 30 sheets of Fuji Provia 8x10. New film is no longer available. I keep my film in a freezer. Polaroid film is also not available. However if you really need these, I have made them and can probably do so for you again if you're in a pinch.

SLIDES AND TRANSPARENCIES FROM DIGITAL FILES (top)

I can make 35 mm slides and transparencies from digital files that I create. The company I use does a fabulous job and I've made hundreds of slides this way. If you have paintings, I can eliminate frames and backgrounds in Photoshop before the files are sent to the lab. These digital slides are almost impossible to tell from film slides but film images are still slightly better, especially if you ever want to reproduce an image.

Digital slide pricing:

Slides are 15 dollars for the first slide of an image and $5 each for additionals of the same image, plus a one time $15 shipping fee to get the slides from my lab to the studio via Fed-ex. Normal turnaround is one week. Faster if you pay for Fed-ex overnight, which is another $15.
